- An important rule while writing the anuswaara, the अं at the end of any word is that, if the following word starts with a consonant, it goes up as in अं. But if the following word starts with a vowel, then the dot on top becomes a 'half म् (m)' as in अम्. For example,
अयं हरिः (ayaM hariH)
अयम् अरिः (ayam ariH)
Also, it stays as a 'half म् (m)' at the end of the sentence (since there is no following consonant).
Please also write about the rule where the anuswaara takes the sound of the 5 character in the barakhadi depending upon the following consonant.
ReplyDeletee.g. चिंतन = चिन्तन
शंभो = शम्भो
त्वमेव विद्या द्रविणं त्वमेव = त्वमेव विद्या द्रविणन् त्वमेव
etc

द्रविणं त्वमेव to द्रविणन् त्वमेव is an optional sandhi.
The above rule is compulsory when that happens within a word, but between two words, it is optional.
Hope that helps.
The rule for the 5th vyanjana of the varga to replace the nasal sounds would be 'अनुस्वारस्य ययि परसवर्णः - anuswaarasya yayi parasavarNaH'
ReplyDeleteAnd the rule for when the 'm' becomes 'anuswaara' or 'vyanjana ma' is 'मोऽनुस्वारः - mo&nuswaaraH'
Ji Namaste.
DeleteCould you please explain about what is the correct way to write?
- चिंतन = चिन्तन
शंभो = शम्भो
अङ्ग / अंग
अम्बा
and also सम्स्कृत or as संस्कृत ?

Hari Om! Rahsmi ji, Could you please clarify some anuswaara chanting rules in context of the Gita 2nd chapter videos published by Chinmaya Vrindavan, chanted by Swamiji.
ReplyDelete1)Swamiji was chanting verse 1 as Tam Tatha instead of tan tatha and verse 5 as Dronam cha (instead of Dronan cha) which is fine as I understand anuswaara rules are optional in between two words but mandatory in the same word. But my question is more on the other verses below
2) In verses such as 5, 11,35 etc, Swamiji was using the 'n' after anuswaara even though the subsequent akshara after anuswara is not a nasal in that class. For example, in
verse 5, Hatvartha Kama(n)stu,
verse 11 Prajnavada(n)shcha and Gatasu(n)shcha
Verse 35 Ma(n)syante
I am thinking all the 'n's in the brackets should be actually 'm' as the next akshara in the samyukta vyanjanas after the anuswaara is either sa, sha, etc.
I heard other Swamijis using 'm' only.
Is it more of a ease in chanting? What is the correct strictly as per anuswaara rule for 5,11, and 35 examples.
HariOm
Thanks for your Superb blog!

Just seeing this message, Aparna.
Delete1) You are right, between two words, the anuswaara rule is optional.
2) Here the words are actually prajnaavaadaan + cha; gataasuun + cha; etc.
Because of this, there is an addition of the 'sa' or 'sha' (as per words). There is no 'ma'kaara coming anywhere. Hence the chanting given for the competition has the 'n' sound only.
Hope that helps.
Can you please share swamijis audio - i am looking for audio with accurate pronunciations of anuswaras in all verses - its slightly confusing where anuswara follows avargiya vyanjans like ya ra la va sha sa tra..etc

ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, there isn't an option right now, Satya ji. However, I can look into adding a 'Print pdf' button to each lesson. That way, you can print the lessons individually. Hope that would help.
DeleteYes please , thanks for the prompt reply. and I can print to read, thank you - Satya
ReplyDeleteSatya ji, the 'Print Pdf' button has been added now. You can print out individual lesson for your reference. Hope that helps.
